The project, produced by Universal Cable Productions from writer and Executive Producer Marti Noxon, is based on the book series by Executive Producer Vicki Iovine.

The one hour dramedy follows a best-selling author of a self-help book series who is secretly hiding her separation from her husband as she starts to navigate her life as a single woman in her 40's in Los Angeles. This fall, Edelstein will appear in on ABC' CASTLE in a multi-episode arc.

Edelstein has lent her voice to several animated programs including King of the Hill, American Dad!, Superman: The Animated Series (as Mercy Graves, Lex Luthor's bodyguard, a role she later reprised in several episodes of Justice League) and the video game adaptation of Blade Runner (1997).Her film credits include small parts and cameos in What Women Want, Keeping the Faith, As Good as It Gets, and Daddy Day Care.

From 2004 to 2011, she played Dr. Lisa Cuddy, the Dean of Medicine at Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital and frequent character foil and ex-girlfriend to title character Gregory House (Hugh Laurie) on Fox's TV series House, M.D.

All the Scoop on 'Girlfriends' Guide To Divorce'

When the chips are down, sometimes you just need your best friends. That's the idea behind Bravo's first-ever scripted series, Girlfriends' Guide to Divorce, premiering December 2.

The series stars Lisa Edelstein, Necar Zadegan, Alanna Ubach, Julianna Guill, and Beau Garrett. Edelstein plays the show's leading lady, who reaches out to her girlfriends after she and her husband divorce, hoping to find herself as she sets out on her new life. It's that real-life concept that Marti Noxon thinks viewers will relate to.

Noxon, the show's executive producer and a producer of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Mad Men, tells Variety that GG2D "discuss all these issues and bring them to life in a way that's not a drag, in a way that can be funny and fun. And everybody's flawed, that's the truth of life."

"It just feels a little bit like a dream come true," Noxon adds. "How often do you get to write about real women with work problems and family problems, and they're not a doctor or a lawyer or a cop?"

The pilot is based on Vicki Iovine's best-selling book series. Noxon, who has battled other kinds of demons working on Buffy The Vampire Slayer, explained how the series fits on a network famous for Real Housewives and Million Dollar Listings.

"In a weird way, this is more real than reality because we get to go behind the scenes and see people having sex and fighting the way they might not on reality TV," she said. "I feel like divorce is kind of a Trojan horse into what for me is a bigger issue right now, which is sexual politics."

Meanwhile, Lisa Edelstein spoke to The Dish ahead of the show's premiere. She revealed how fun it's been to shoot the series.

"I have worked with some of the best crews around, but this particular group is a truly unique one," she said. "They frequently burst into song! Song! With harmonies! Mostly it's 'Happy Birthday' (regardless of if it is their birthday or not) and mostly it's if someone does something awesome or awesomely embarrassing. Applause, too, they are big on applauding. It is just a fantastic collection of beautiful weirdos that have great leadership and a great work ethic."

Girlfriends' Guide to Divorce premieres December 2 at 10/9c on Bravo.

START DATE: GIRLFRIENDS’ GUIDE TO DIVORCE Season Two with Lisa Edelstein Expected to Start Filming in Vancouver June 8th

Divorce seemed to be off the table for Abby (Lisa Edelstein) and Jake (Paul Adelstein) in the season one finale of Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce. But what kind of series would that be?

The Bravo dramedy is back in metro Vancouver next month to shoot a second season of thirteen episodes. From showrunner Marti Noxon and based on books by Vicki Iovine, Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce is a contemporary and fun take on a woman tackling life after divorce with the help of her girlfriends. Best-selling self-help author Abby navigates her new life in Los Angeles as a single Mom in her early forties as her husband Paul hooks up with CW actress Becca. Not surprisingly, Abby finds advice from her single friends, divorced former model Phoebe (Beau Garrett), lawyer Delia (Necar Zadegan) and newly separated Jo (Alanna Ubach) more relevant than her married ones and that leads to some big changes — like hooking up with her own younger man Will (Warren Christie). In the season one finale, Abby had choices to make:: a Mexican getaway with Will or a reconciliation with Jake.

She chooses Jake but we can see her happy ending will be undone by the unexpected pregnancy of Jake’s CW actress girlfriend Becca.

GG2D’s first season filmed around Vancouver from early June to late October in locations like the Rosewood Georgia Hotel and various night spots like Ginger 62 with Kitsilano playing residential L.A. neighbourhoods and the empty Nokia building in Glenlyon Business Park as the kids’ school.

Bravo's 'Girlfriends' Guide to Divorce' to End After Season 5 (Exclusive)

The end is in sight for Girlfriends' Guide to Divorce.

In April, Bravo handed out a rare supersized three-season renewal for the hourlong dramedy starring Lisa Edelstein, and now The Hollywood Reporter can exclusively reveal that the fifth season of Girlfriends' Guide will be its last. "We're going to land the plane," creator Marti Noxon tells THR of Bravo's first-ever scripted series.

The series, which is produced in-house by Universal Cable Productions, will film 19 more episodes all at once over the course of the next eight to nine months in Vancouver. Bravo will then air them as three distinct seasons with shortened windows in between. A seven-episode third season will be followed by six-episode fourth and fifth seasons.

Following the lead of AMC — which famously split the final seasons of Breaking Bad and Mad Men into separate, shortened runs — and more recently HBO and its rather similar Game of Thrones' wrap-up plans, the decision to stretch out the final batch of Girlfriends' Guide episodes was a strategic one made by the NBCUniversal-owned cable network and studio.

"In today's world, it's all about flexibility, partnership and creating the best experience and the most valuable asset for everyone involved," chief content officer of NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment and president of UCP Jeff Wachtel told THR. "Doing this three-season pickup allows for Bravo to plan in the future. … There are three separate times over the next couple of years where they'll be able to drive ratings and that branding story."

Future seasons of the divorce dramedy will air alongside the other scripted series on Bravo's roster including Jill Kargman's half-hour Odd Mom Out and the upcoming dark comedy My So Called Wife from Girlfriends' Guide writer and star Paul Adelstein.

The multiseason pickup of Girlfriends' Guide benefits the studio, too, as five seasons of the series allows them to achieve more profitability via international and SVOD sales than they would a three- or four-season show. "It's kind of a real thing after five seasons," said Wachtel, adding that the rollout strategy is a win for the talent involved, too.

"Shooting all of the episodes in one large bunch is just best for Marti, who is a very in demand showrunner — she has movies and miniseries going left and right," he explained. "This is a way for us to really capture her attention for a period of time. She knows, 'Good, and once I do this, I'm out. I don't have to keep putting my life on hold to come back.'"

In terms of the writing process, the arrangement also takes a bit of the stress off Noxon in that she has sufficient time to finish out the show's narrative. "We want to enable Marti to tell the story she always imagined for Abby McCarthy and her friends without the constraints of season-to-season orders, fully realized through to completion," said Frances Berwick, president of lifestyle networks at NBCU Cable Entertainment. Of the spaced-out release strategy, she added: "[It] also keeps the series relevant and top-of-mind for viewers, with less waiting time between seasons."

For Noxon, the unorthodox plan is a welcome one. "It's a creative way to get to the end of the series, but also to maximize everybody's time up in Vancouver [where Girlfriends' Guide is shot] because it's such a bear to stop production, have everybody come back, send everybody back again," said Noxon, who previously served as a writer-producer on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. "It was really smart of them."

But the sped-up production schedule also means that Noxon and her writing team have to pen more scripts than usual at once. "It's definitely challenging," she acknowledges. What helps is that the shortened seasons make the larger order more manageable in terms of the storytelling, along with the fact that Noxon has had a final scene in mind for quite some time. "From the beginning, I've had an idea of how I've wanted the series to end so at least I had that picture in my head," she said.

In addition to serving as the showrunner on Girlfriends' Guide, Noxon is also an executive producer on Lifetime's Bachelor-skewering drama UnREAL, though she left the show after the second episode of season two. When asked if the rumors that she may be resuming a more active role in the third season are true, Noxon remained intentionally vague. "It's an ongoing conversation," she said, pausing before she added with a laugh: "She says cryptically."

But whether Noxon will even have time to add another series into her already-crazed schedule is another question. "It would definitely strain the system, and […] it's already a little strained," she admitted. Noxon has HBO miniseries Sharp Objects starring Amy Adams in the queue, too. The high-profile project, written by Gone Girl scribe Gillian Flynn, is set to start production in Los Angeles in March, just as Noxon wraps Girlfriends' Guide.

Given all the behind-the-scenes drama on UnREAL, does Noxon even have a desire to go back to it? "Of course. I really love that world. I love the backdrop of reality television, and I think there's still a lot to say in that world. I don't think that that world is exhausted at all," she said, adding that her potentially returning to the show is a "never say never situation."

"And it's hard not to want to drive those Maseratis," she laughed.
