.'House' star Hugh Laurie to reign as Bacchus
NEW ORLEANS - Fresh off the heels of a spectacular New Orleans concert honoring his musical mentor, Professor Longhair, actor and musician Hugh Laurie was announced Friday evening as the 2014 monarch of the Krewe of Bacchus.
The British actor, best known for his portrayal of Dr. Gregory House on “House,” will reign as Bacchus XLVI when the parade rolls on Sunday, March 2, the krewe announced.
Laurie was in town Thursday for a benefit concert at Tipitina's.
In addition to his musical career, during his "House" TV series run, Laurie received six Emmy nominations, two Golden Globe awards and two Screen Actors Guild Awards.
“Mr. Laurie has a great sense of humor and we think he will be a perfect fit for Mardi Gras,” said krewe captain Owen “Pip” Brennan in a statement. “We predict the Mardi Gras crowds will love him.”
Laurie joins a list of celebrities to portray Bacchus, the god of wine, at the head of the super krewe’s parade, including popular recent monarchs Will Ferrell, Drew Brees and James Gandolfini. Last year’s Bacchus was actor G.W. Bailey. Favorite Bacchus monarchs throughout the krewe’s 45 year history include Bob Hope, Perry Como, Jackie Gleason, Phil Harris and Ed McMahon among others.
In addition to his benefit performance Thursday in New Orleans, at Tipitina’s, in recent years, Laurie has explained his love for New Orleans and New Orleans music, and Professor Longhair in particular. His 2011 album, “Let Them Talk,” was partly recorded in New Orleans and formed the basis for a PBS “Great Performances” special broadcast last year.
Laurie even includes a version of Professor Longhair’s classic “Tipitina” on his newest CD, “Didn’t It Rain.”
Thursday’s “Fess Fest” musical fundraiser was organized by the Tipitina’s Foundation, which has spent the past several years working with volunteer groups and the United Way to rehab Professor Longhair’s Terpsichore St. home, the only home the music icon ever owned. Plans call for a portion of the renovated home to serve as a museum to “Fess” and the New Orleans music he gave birth to.

Bacchus 47 Hugh Laurie relishes time in New Orleans
Actor Hugh Laurie jumped right into an Oscar-worthy performance in his role as Bacchus 47 and was an immediate crowd pleaser at Children's Hospital.
"Last week, I happened to be at Buckingham Palace with Her Majesty the Queen. This is much cooler," Laurie said to cheers.
"Oh it's cool, and guess what I asked him, before he leaves? 'Do some surgery before you leave,'" said Children's staffer Coralee Smith.
"He is a really cute guy," said Jessica Leonard of Chackbay, whose son Ben is a patient. "He gave our son two doubloons personally and talked to him and made sure he is okay."
Laurie is also a talented musician who has always loved New Orleans and musicians like the Bucktown All-Stars.
"The fact that this is going on, not on every street corner, but pretty damn close to it. How can you not love a city that has this at its heart?" asked Laurie.
He loves New Orleans so much he was afraid to make his first visit.
"I was anxious about coming to this city for so long, because when you have something in your mind, this golden, this golden place in your mind, you worry that when you arrive there, it'll be banks and shoes shops like everywhere else. So I didn't come for a long time, because I was, but when I came, My God!"
Laurie has never been to Mardi Gras, so when he had the microphone, I tried to fill him in. "I've been going to Mardi Gras all my life. You are going to have a ball."
"What you're saying is, you're better qualified," he replied.
"No, I'm not qualified to be king."
"I agree, I'm not qualified, but that's part of the thrill for me, this is going to be a wekeend of total discovery and adventure for me," Laurie said.
It will be a treat for Hugh Laurie, and the crowd.

Hugh Laurie, the actor best known for his work in the TV show “House,” was the 2014 king of Bacchus. The Mardi Gras parade starts in Uptown New Orleans on Napoleon Avenue and makes its way down St. Charles.

It is a huge celebration which sees thousands of people line the streets to watch spectacular floats ridden by ornately dressed kings and fantasy creatures.
When it comes to choosing somebody to get into character, nobody could have been more perfect for the role of King Bacchus than Hugh Laurie at the 'Bacchus Explores Our Sportsman's Paradise' themed Mardi Gras in New Orleans on Sunday.
The 54-year-old actor and musician seemed to relish his role as king of the floats, especially how convenient his costume was for covering up the dreaded middle aged symptom, balding.
Embracing his regalia the House actor smiled and waved to the crowd dressed in an elaborate white tunic adorned with gold sequin wreaths, wearing a gold medallion necklace.
The actor and musician seemed keen to cover the signs of ageing, as he made sure his jewel encrusted crown was carefully placed to cover his thinning hair.
Throwing doubloons which depicted prints of his own face, Hugh was clearly chuffed with his imprint being cast on the pseudo currency, tweeting ahead of the celebrations on Friday:
'Having your face on a doubloon is one thing - a very big one thing - but a tweet from Dr John is.... I can't even put it into words...'
Hugh played the character of Bacchus son of Zeus, who was the god of wine and vegetation in Greek mythology.
Following up with a captioned snap of the metallic pink coins which depicted his chisel cheeked portrait, the actor added humorously: 'Bitcoin collapses. May I introduce....'
The New Orleans Mardi Gras comes each year with dozens of parades filled with marching bands, colorful floats and parade-goers.
It is tradition to have a famous face fulfill the role of King of Bacchus, with Will Ferrel wearing the crown in 2012, and Hulk Hogan donning royal robes as King in 2008.
The Flight Of The Phoenix actor took his new role as king of the parade seriously as he tweeted the evening before: 'Under house arrest tonight with kingly duties upcoming. Although tempted to slip the cordon and see the great Trombone Shorty.'
